Vertical Jump Training for Beach Volleyball

Beach volleyball requires more jumping per player than any other sport. Plyometric exercises are the best way to train yourself how to jump higher. You can’t compete on a high level in beach volleyball if you can’t jump high. Jumping in sand is very different than jumping off of a court because you can’t use your forward momentum as much as you can on a hard surface. For this reason the vertical jump training is different.

When you jump in sand, you sink before you start to go up which will end up taking a few inches off of your vertical leap. Mens beach volleyball net height is 8 feet tall. That means you have to jump at least nine feet so in reality you have to be reaching about 9 and a half feet every time you jump because the sand will eat about 6 inches of your vert.

Jumping Form

The form is different in the sand. A normal volleyball approach is a five step and you go forward a lot once you are in the air. When playing beach volleyball you can’t jump forward as much, you will need to learn to take a shorter approach and jump straight up instead of jumping forward.

Timing

The timing is completely different in the sand as well. You have to take into consideration how much you will sink in the sand and other factors such as wind.

What other sport requires at 75% of the people playing to jump for each point? 3 out of the 4 people will jump during each rally and in many cases all 4 will do so. The player that serves that ball will do a jump serve. The opposing player will jump to hit the ball and the blocker will jump to try to block the ball. If the ball is dug by the 4th player he/she will end up jumping to spike the ball resulting on every person playing jumping at least once for a point.
